Meeting Room #2 at Portland Public Library
Portland Public Library will host a discussion of Maine author Susan Hand Shetterly’s captivating Settled in the Wild on Tuesday, June 19th, from 5:30-6:30pm in meeting room 2 at 5 Monument Square. Author Paul Doiron has chosen this thoughtful and remarkable nature memoir as one of the Maine Humanities Council’s Read ME books for summer 2018.
Paul Doiron writes, "Settled in the Wild... [is] about watching deer drift through the field at dusk and about leaving the window open in April to hear spring arrive with the first piping of the peepers. It’s about the familiar, the secret, and the strange, written by an artist whose gift it is to help us see our shared environment as we’ve never seen it before.”
All who attend this book discussion are encouraged to bring along thoughts on other favorite works of writing where nature, the wild, science, and people come together! We’ll offer our own recommendations of new and classic nature memoirs and science writing from Portland Public Library’s collections.
