Scarborough, nicely positioned on the coast six miles southwest
of Portland, is a pleasant commuter town, although it is 30 percent
industrial and small business as well. Among its most beautiful
features is the scenic 3,100-acre Scarborough salt marsh. Maine
Medical Research Center and Hannaford Bros., a huge food retailer,
both call Scarborough home. Maine's first governor, William King
was born here and the internationally respected artist, Winslow
Homer, painted many of his best known works at Prouts Neck. Scarborough's
quick access to nearby I-95/Maine Turnpike puts Portland just minutes
away to the north and New Hampshire less than 40 miles south.
