Portland is Maine’s largest city and the center of business activity in the region. The heart of the city, known as the Old Port, is home to art galleries, exceptional restaurants, unique shops and many of the region’s leading businesses, financial institutions and law firms.
Portland’s natural deep-water port rivals Boston, New York and Philadelphia for cargo and oil shipments. During the summer months, the harbor enjoys visits from many cruise ships. The Amtrak “Downeaster” passenger railroad runs between Portland and Boston several times a day. The City also has rail service offered by St. Lawrence & Atlantic and the Maine Central Railroad which connects Portland to all of Maine, the continental U.S. and Canada. The busiest airport in the state, the Portland International Jetport, is located only a few miles from downtown Portland, which allows for easy and convenient travel to and from Maine.
Portland also offers exceptional educational opportunities. The city has two large high schools as well as the Portland Arts & Technology High School, and several private secondary schools. Portland Adult Education offers programs year-round to students of all ages. In addition to the University of Southern Maine, Portland is home to the Maine College of Art, the University of Maine School of Law, Kaplan University, Bangor Theological Seminary, The University of New England, and The University of New Hampshire.
Portland bustles with activity all year long. American League Hockey team the Portland Pirates plays 40 home games each year at the Cumberland County Civic Center. In the spring, the Portland Sea Dogs baseball team, now the AA affiliate of World Series Champs The Boston Red Sox, play at Hadlock Field. A recent addition to the Portland sports scene is the NBA Development Team, the Maine Red Claws, who are affiliated with the Boston Celtics. In Portland, there is always plenty to do.
