MORE THAN $308,000 RAISED SO FAR! PORTLAND/BANGOR, ME – On May 2, NEWS CENTER Maine held its second Feed Maine Telethon to help end food insecurity in Maine. Volunteers from several organizations joined forces with NEWS CENTER Maine to answer calls at the in-studio phone banks in Portland and Bangor. As of this writing, NEWS CENTER Maine’s 2019 Feed Maine Telethon has accepted donations from individual donors, a TEGNA Foundation Grant and sponsors totaling $137,592, including $4,315 in pledged donations. Along with the $168,601 that was donated to Feed Maine program prior to the telethon—the grand total so far is $308,867. For every donation of one dollar, four meals can be distributed by Good Shepherd Food Bank. Do the math and that adds up to 1,235,468 meals that can be distributed throughout Maine. In Maine, 14 percent of households are food insecure, meaning they don’t have access to enough nutritious food. Food insecurity forces people to skip meals and restrict their diets to low-cost, unhealthy foods. 1 in 5 Maine children lives in a food insecure home. “NEWS CENTER Maine partnered with Good Shepherd Food Bank, and launched the year-round Feed Maine program in September 2017,” stated Judy Horan, President and General Manager of NEWS CENTER Maine | WLBZ. “Our mission was to help Mainers gain access to nutritious food when and where they need and ultimately help end food insecurity in Maine.” “No Mainer should ever go hungry. NEWS CENTER Maine, along with the help of our incredibly generous viewers, is proud to have surpassed our goal by helping the Good Shepherd Food Bank distribute more that 1 million meals,” stated Brian Cliffe, President and General Manager of NEWS CENTER Maine | WCSH. “A special thanks to our sponsors too—Hannaford and Maine Honda Dealers.” The opportunity to donate to Feed Maine is still open.
