Urquhart was surprised with the honor at the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce’s annual event, Imagine Portland, January 30 at Brick South, On Thompson’s Point in Portland. Jeremy has always had an interest in working with young people. In college, he volunteered in the local elementary classrooms.
After college he spent a year in Africa, in Lesotho, where he volunteered for a non-profit called Kick-4-Life, which mentors street children through soccer. While there he created the capital city’s first city-wide recycling program, and used the fees from it to fund a bike project for the Kick 4 Life kids. Back in the US, he coached youth lacrosse, and spent a week each summer volunteering as a counselor for Camp Pals, a camp for children and young adults with Down Syndrome. Then, just after moving back to Maine, he fulfilled a life-long goal, and enlisted in the Marines. He continues to serve his country this way, as a member of the USMC reserves, which finds him away for one weekend a month, and several weeks each summer. After becoming a financial adviser for Edward Jones in South Portland, he continued his work in the community, doing such things as putting together an Edward Jones team each year to participate in the annual Walk to End Alzheimers, and teaching classes at the Sable Lodge Retirement Community.
