Clapp and Diffin are principals of the firm which provides consulting services in civil engineering, environmental compliance, solid waste engineering, site investigation and remediation, geotechnical engineering, and water resources.

Clapp has served as a key member of SME’s senior management team for nearly 10 years and heads the firm’s site investigation and remediation sector.  He is a certified geologist with close to 30 years of expertise in characterization and remediation of contaminated soil, groundwater, and building materials, and specializes in hydrogeology, geochemistry, sediment transport, and geotechnical issues.  With Clapp at the helm, SME’s site investigation and remediation sector has experienced significant growth in recent years to lead the company in annual revenue. Clapp is also a director of the Environmental & Energy Council of Maine.

Diffin joined SME in 2012 to lead the firm’s civil engineering group and was promoted to principal in 2016.   He is a licensed professional engineer with experience on a wide variety of civil engineering design and construction management projects for private and public sector clients.  Diffin has been an active member of SME’s management team and key in the company’s strategic planning.  Under Diffin’s lead, SME’s civil engineering sector revenue has quadrupled since 2016. Diffin serves on the board of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maine.

SME co-founder Peter Maher is stepping back from the role of president at the firm and is now its chief financial officer.  He and fellow engineer John Sevee, now retired, started the business in 1985.

“Erik and Dan have proven themselves to be leaders who will continue to guide SME to new heights,” said Maher. “I’m confident that they will do a great job, the company’s in excellent hands.”

Maher said the leadership changes are part of SME’s long-range plan, “to continue providing our clients with the high quality of services they’ve come to rely on.”
